Do you still make "mix tapes"?
Music can save you. Over and over again.
Songs. Sometimes we don’t even understand the lyrics. We can hear the tune and mumble the words and it just transports us to a place. It takes all the weight we carry. It shines a bright light into our shadows. It gives us hope and sets us free. If only for three minutes and eighteen seconds.
Dwight Twilley died last week. He wrote the song, Looking for the Magic . It was a decade ago when I first heard this song. During a time, my husband and I were a bit lost over the health complications our daughter was facing. I remember being in the passenger seat of the car and this song coming on. My husband and I locked eyes. A knowing. In that brief time the song played, we knew that it was all going to work out. Somehow.
There will always be things in life that will bring you to your knees. But something as simple as a song can give you the power to stand up over and over again.
I’ve always been a “mix tape” maker. These days it takes the form of a Spotify mix. To be honest, I want to live my life to a soundtrack. When the music plays, I dream. I let go. I float in a universe of possibility.
So I invite you today to put on your mix and dance. It’s gotta be loud and you gotta dance like no one is watching. And who cares if they are?
And here is my gift to you. Download, print it, post it where you will see it. A daily reminder from me to you.
Thank you Dwight. Thank you for making music. We never know when we create art, who will be moved by it or if it will matter. But one thing is for sure - even after we are gone - our art lives on.
Until Next Time,
Kim
P.S. Please share your song. I’m always looking for new music for my mix tape. : )

“Something in the Way She Moves” by James Taylor is my favorite song ever. It transports me, even if I only hear a few bars. The magic of music is real.
