I am a new subscriber -- I immediately subscribed after reading your interview with Anne Butera, one of my most treasured artists & teachers! Your art is darling and soothing. My tiny thing many days is stopping in my tracks to admire the flock of adorable bushtits at the suet feeder just outside our kitchen window!
Awe, thank you. Anneβs art is so beautiful. Iβm happy to have found another birder as a reader! I am deeply immersed in a bird phase right now. π
I am sitting here in my northern San Fernando Valley home, window open (itβs nice and cool this morning) listening to the house wrens and sparrows, a California Towhees, and an Allenβs hummingbird. Itβs my favorite part of each dayβthe quiet morning, listening to the birds. I also look forward to the Great Backyard Birdcount! And I have a lizard βfriendβ in my yard as well. (Well, as much saying hi to a lizard as it scampers away could be called a friendship βΊοΈ) I love your writings, and your art, Kim. They bring me peace and a smile each time I read your account.
From your descriptions of the snail, I think you might have read the book βSounds of a Wild Snail Eating?β Itβs one of my favorites.
You live in LA too! The mornings are the most beautiful time of day. It is when the birds are the most active. I think this must be the time of year lizards breed or something? They are all over the place all of a sudden. I'm going to have to investigate this! Thanks so much for reading and the kind words!
Today my little thing is gratitude for you dear Kim. I came to Substack to share about my family history. But the best thing to happen because of Substack is that I became a birder! Thank you Kim for letting everyone know about the Great Backyard Bird Count and sharing your creativity here.
Awe, MamaCarole, this has made my day to read that I inspired you to be a birder. π₯° It is quite a delightful hobby. My family always made comments about my grandmother being obsessed with birds. Now she has passed that torch to me. A good torch to hold.
I live at the southern tip of a forest. My home is surrounded by tall trees and there are a couple of hiking trails nearby. I love it here, but still occasionally have to remind myself to just go out there and spend time with all that beauty. Thanks for the reminder.
The colors on the art under "Be a Birder" are so beautiful. It seems like you have created a sanctuary for so many small creatures π
Thank you! We can grow so much here, it attracts all the creatures. βΊοΈ

It is so true. I tell myself to get my work done first - then I just keep working. I have to go no matter how busy I am. It is always worth it. π
