Looking for the Magic✨: A Nature Almanac
Feb 2026 / Birds that mate for life 🦜🦜
Welcome to Looking for the Magic✨: A Nature Almanac
It is February – the month we gift love notes and floral bouquets. What better creature feature than birds that pair for life? They are fascinating. To imagine birds travel thousands of miles across the planet – only to return and pick one mate, again and again. They care for each other, raise their young as partners, and perform intricate ritual dances that renew their bond over time. It makes you wonder if love is not just a human story. That maybe, just maybe, the idea of soulmates stretches beyond our species and into the wider living world.
Things included this month:
Creature Feature: Love Birds
The Snow Moon: February 1st
Creative Prompts: To Nourish the Soul
While 90% of birds will pick a monogamous mate each season, the other 10% will mate for a lifetime. Bird couples migrate thousands of miles each year, only to return to the same nesting places year after year. Many bird species even return to the exact nest.
Courtship dances aren’t just for first meetings, but repeated rituals each year. One might say it is a renewal of their bird wedding vows.
Some of these bird pairs seem a little extra magical in their courtship…
🦢 Swans: the soulmates
Swans are the gold standard of avian devotion. They stick together all year. They swim side-by-side, mirror each other’s movements, and greet one another with curved-neck heart shapes. If one partner dies, the other may spend a long time alone before pairing again – if ever.
🌊 Albatross: long-distance lovers
Albatross pairs may spend months apart crossing oceans, yet return to the exact same partner and nesting site. Some pairs stay bonded for 50-plus years. That’s a whole human lifetime of choosing each other again and again.
Their reunion rituals include elaborate dances, bill clacking, and sky-pointing displays. Sky-pointing displays are part of the courtship dance of albatrosses and are said to be one of the most beautiful long-form love rituals in the animal world.
🦅 Bald Eagles: the nesters
Bald eagles typically mate for life and return to the same nest annually, adding to it each season. Some nests become massive – thousands of pounds – like a summer home awaiting their return. The size of the nest reflects the years the couple has been returning to it - together.
🐧 The Puffins: a beacon of light
When puffins return each year to their breeding grounds, their beaks turn from a dull grey to bright orange. Scientists discovered in 2018 that their beaks actually glow a greenish-blue under UV light. The puffins’ eyesight registers UV light. It is as if love sets them aglow.
🦩 Cranes: lifelong dancing partners
Cranes form long-term pair bonds and perform dancing displays together – leaping, bowing, tossing grasses – not just in courtship, but throughout their lives. They also sing “duets” synchronized together to strengthen their bond.
🦜 Macaws: always in twos
Macaws form lifelong couples and are rarely seen apart. They coordinate calls, fly together, and feed each other. In the wild, a lone macaw is often a sign that something happened to its mate. Couples can even be seen “holding feet.”
Holding feet? Sigh. They hold feet. ☺️
I hope you’ve enjoyed this bird love bomb.
☽✶ The full moon names featured each month are rooted in a mix of Native American, Colonial American, and European traditions. In earlier times, these names described the entire lunar month, not only the night when the moon appeared full.☽✶
The Snow Moon rises in the heart of winter. Its name comes from the amount of snow that traditionally falls in February. Snow blankets the landscape, creating a magical stillness. It is the time of year when animals hibernate, and blooms are dormant.
Magically speaking, the Snow Moon is a lantern of endurance. In February, resources are scarce, and the landscape is barren. Yet underground roots are replenishing, and animals are resting. In time, they will all emerge as strong and beautiful as before.
This moon invites reflection and conservation of energy. Not everything that is growing looks like growth. Some transformations happen in silence, in solitude, and in rest. Then they emerge in spring, stronger and more beautiful than ever.
❄️ 🌕 The Snow Moon Meditation:
The Snow Moon reminds us to take time to rest, reset, and conserve our energy for when we emerge from our dens. This February 17th, we move from the Year of the Snake to the Year of the Horse. The Snake focused on shedding old skins and deep, internal work. The Horse emerges with a newfound energy to pursue with inspired energy. It is time to take all that wisdom you’ve acquired and put it into action.
Create a little space: Light a candle or incense, sip some tea.
Take some slow breaths: Let yourself be in the moment.
Visualize: Imagine you are standing in a snow-covered forest under the glow of the Snow Moon. The landscape is quiet and still. You are warm in your coat and boots, held in a protective cocoon. Like a caterpillar in a chrysalis, you are in a private season of alchemy. Everything you’ve gathered is being refined into something new. For this moment, you are free – free from timelines, tasks, and expectations. There is nothing to manage and nowhere to rush.
Ask yourself:✧What sets my spirit free?
Let whatever arises, arise.
Journal: Open your eyes and write down what came to you. Don’t filter or organize – just capture it. Not necessarily big goals or life plans – simply the truths that surfaced when you set yourself free.
Reflect on:
✧ What am I ready to shed this year?
✧ What wants to grow in my life?
One item: Select one thing you’d like to welcome into your life this year. At least one. Decide on a simple starting point – even 10 minutes a day counts. Let it be small enough to begin, and meaningful enough to matter.
It might be:
✧ reading daily
✧ journaling
✧ walking in nature
✧ writing a few lines of poetry
✧ beginning a passion project
Start small. Show up daily. Let it grow.
Little moon rituals you can indulge monthly…
✦ Crystal Moon Magic:
Do you collect crystals or gemstones? Ever since I was a kid living in Colorado, you could not keep me away from a table of gems. You can pop one of your favorites on the windowsill to soak up some moon magic energy. I often carry a favorite stone in my pocket. When I change, they go flying across the floor. Essentially, I have little magical stones living all around me.
✦ Moon Water Magic:
Leave a bowl or jar of water out overnight to soak up the moonlight. The next day, use it to water your indoor plants and infuse your space with a little lunar energy. I keep a mason jar of moon water on my desk to water my plants there. It infuses a little bit of moon magic into my workspace. 😊
♡ Creative Prompts for February ♡
✦ Homemade Valentine
I remember when my daughter was in elementary school, I would get so excited when Valentine’s Day arrived. I would sit and make homemade valentines with her to gift her class. It was so nostalgic. The paper cut hearts, the little handwritten notes. You are never too old to make a valentine. Make one for your partner, your kid, or your galentine! Nothing hits like a handmade card. Especially in this digital world.
✦ Bake a Sweet Treat
One of my favorite things to do is to gift cookies to people. I love making them. And I love how excited people are to receive them. It is delightful to cut cookies into heart shapes or make a big pan of fudgy brownies. Just do it.
✦ A Date With You
When I was younger, I never had a serious boyfriend around Valentine’s Day. I didn’t pout about it. It was a life choice. But I still LOVED Valentine’s Day. I used to plan to do something special, like treat myself to my favorite lunch, go see a movie, or plan a fun hike. Make space for yourself this month. Plan a date to do something you love.
✦ The Snow Moon Meditation (listed above)
In this month of wintering, take the time to actually decide where you would like to dedicate more of your precious time. We can spend a lifetime doing work that is more a paycheck and less meaningful. We can also spend a lot of time wearing the work mask at our jobs instead of showing our true selves. Indulge the person underneath all that. That person needs more space to grow this year.
✦ A Word
Have you ever picked a word of the year? Many do. It is something you want to focus on. Something that you want more of in your life. After doing the Snow Moon meditation, see if you can find a word. Something you could put in front of you daily, as a reminder. This way you won’t lose your inspiration. It will be a little reminder to bring you back to that place.
Until Next Time✨,
Kim
