The Great Backyard Bird Count Starts Today! (Feb 13-16th)
Birdsong feeds your soul. Let's give back to the birds. ✨🌙
My Tiny Thing this week was sitting in my backyard at the crack of dawn, listening to the birds sing. I discovered new ones that don’t usually visit my yard. And this morning, it will actually help scientists with bird research. You only need 15 minutes to join in.
Okay, this is the Merlin app, and I’m addicted. You download it, hit record, and it tells you the name of each bird singing. It even highlights the bird as you hear it. It is amazing. And free. You can even click on the bird and learn about it. You’re so welcome. 😊
Each year, birders around the world take part in something quite magical: The Great Backyard Bird Count (Feb 13-16th). For a few days, people step outside, look around, and notice the birds in their backyard.
These observations help scientists track where different species live and breed – all that good, important stuff that helps us protect them.
Want to join in? It’s easy. You will need two things:
1. Download the eBird app to report on the birds you hear.
2. Download the Merlin Bird ID app to identify birdsongs. (It will be your new favorite app!)
It is a wonderful thing to enjoy on a Friday (and on Valentine’s Day weekend). Hope you take time to listen to the birds!
Until Next Time 🌙 ✨

Completed two checklists today and got a couple new lifers (I’m traveling - so easier to see new species). Grateful for this citizen science effort!!!
I completed three checklists this weekend, all from my backyard and counted eight species including a Robin, the first I have seen this year.
